Makenzie Wilson Fine Art
Painting light, atmosphere, and everyday moments.
I’m an artist focused on continually improving my craft through plein air painting and observational study. My work explores color, movement, and the fleeting qualities of natural light.
“When we painters look at things, we do not see more than other people, we see less. We do not see beauty where others cannot, but we do have the ability to stop the stream of time, to eliminate trivia, and thus understand why things look the way they do. In doing so we can concentrate a viewer’s attention on the fascination of the purely visual. We can simplify things and arrest them at any moment of their happening” (Richard Schmid, Alla Prima II, p. 164).
Not only do I strive to accurately portray my subject, I focus on capturing the truth that studio work often dilutes. My favorite process is to paint from life, or observation: Treating the canvas like a page in my journal, recording the event as it happens. That is not to say I do not enjoy work in the studio, but my preference lies in transforming the blank canvas into a poetic record of an experience rather than a forced copy of the subject.
Many of my paintings are recorded moments of my life, and the choice to paint them comes from my heart. My subjects are chosen with awareness and/or deep response. Sometimes they are common places or human experiences that evoke a feeling or another nostalgic memory. Perhaps they will resonate somehow with someone else, depending on my skill to give visual form to a moment, idea, or feeling.
Artistic Journey
My artistic practice centers around studying light, atmosphere, and form through direct observation. Whether painting outdoors or in the studio, I aim to create work that is honest, expressive, and alive.
I work primarily in oil and acrylic, using plein air painting to strengthen my understanding of color relationships, edges, and composition. Each painting is part of an ongoing process of refinement and exploration.
“Every painting is another opportunity to learn how to truly see.”
